Download The True Deceiver PDF by Tove Jansson Full Free and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2012-10-17 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deception—the lies we tell ourselves and the lies we tell others—is the subject of this, Tove Jansson’s most unnerving and unpredictable novel. Here Jansson takes a darker look at the subjects that animate the best of her work, from her sensitive tale of island life, The Summer Book, to her famous Moomin stories: solitude and community, art and life, love and hate. Snow has been falling on the village all winter long. It covers windows and piles up in front of doors. The sun rises late and sets early, and even during the day there is little to do but trade tales. This year everybody’s talking about Katri Kling and Anna Aemelin. Katri is a yellow-eyed outcast who lives with her simpleminded brother and a dog she refuses to name. She has no use for the white lies that smooth social intercourse, and she can see straight to the core of any problem. Anna, an elderly children’s book illustrator, appears to be Katri’s opposite: a respected member of the village, if an aloof one. Anna lives in a large empty house, venturing out in the spring to paint exquisitely detailed forest scenes. But Anna has something Katri wants, and to get it Katri will take control of Anna’s life and livelihood. By the time spring arrives, the two women are caught in a conflict of ideals that threatens to strip them of their most cherished illusions.

Book excerpt: Film has become such an underpinning of art and pop culture that its potential for inspiring serious thought is often overlooked. Our intellectual involvement with film has been minimized as more in the audience want to be merely amazed and entertained. Essays written by both established and cutting-edge philosophers of film concentrate in this work on the value of film in general and the value of certain films in particular for the study and teaching of ideas. The essays explore such topics as the significance of narrative unity for self knowledge in David Lynch's Lost Highway and in Paul Schrader's Affliction; ambiguity and responsibility in Akira Kurosawa's Rashomon; consciousness and cognition in Orson Welles's Citizen Kane; skepticism in Alfred Hitchcock's Suspicion and David Cronenberg's Naked Lunch; language and gender in Neil Jordan's The Crying Game; Platonic idealism in Chris Marker's La Jetee; race in Spike Lee's Summer of Sam; the concept of the imagination in cognitive film theory; and the role of ideology in feminist film theory. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can a Christian go to Hell? Can a Christian lose their salvation? Can a Christian sin? No study of soteriology (the doctrine of salvation) could be complete without thoroughly answering these important questions. As we dive into God's Word and examine the truth about eternal security, we'll discover the answer to these questions and more. "The Christian's Confidence" is written with the same depth of information as those written by John Maxwell, David Jeremiah, John MacArthur, Charles Stanley, Warren Wiersbe, and other leading Christian authors. This book will give you an in-depth look at an essential Bible doctrine. Inside, you'll find an analysis of what the Bible teaches about eternal security and a careful examination of the passages that seem to contradict that truth. I sincerely hope that you will end up with a solid understanding of the truth that is clearly taught in the Bible and that you will be equipped to defend that truth in the face of those who would attack it. Jesus said, in John 8:32, "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." When you understand the truth of eternal security, you will be free - free from the bondage of religion and free from fear. When you know what the Bible says about salvation, you can be truly free in Christ.

Download Change your World PDF by Jean Maalouf Full Free and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-08 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A New Creation" Our very survival is at stake. We must change. The references and values on which we used to depend are becoming relativized and questionable, and the true sense of integrity, responsibility, and purpose now seems outdated. Instead, we seem to have chosen the path of shortsighted success and gratification, convenient arrangements, and sometimes the one-sided fanaticism and fundamentalism. No wonder we find ourselves in such a deep spiritual crisis that makes all other crises possible, probable, and even certain and extremely dangerous. Change Your World: Awakening to the Power of Truth Beauty Simplicity - Change is an invitation to faithfully recapture the basics, deeply rediscover the very reason for our existence, and carefully reassess our references and values. Truth will make us free. "Beauty will save the world." Simplicity will help redefine our priorities. Change will transform us and will transform our world into "a new creation" (2 Corinthians 5:17). This is a profoundly political book; it describes, in an original and engaging way, how to live and govern from our highest and most sacred consciousness. Therefore, do not expect "politics as usual," "politically correct," "well-calculated," and "feeling good spirituality" talks. Expect rather "as it is" articulation, straightforward approaches, and unequivocal descriptions of the "new creation" values. Our survival depends on our ability to be truly human and in alignment with our most sacred consciousness "the mind of Christ" (1 Corinthians 2:16). Isn't "contemplation the highest form of activity," as Aristotle suggested? Masterfully, Dr. Maalouf uncovers the simple truths of a happy, healthy, and meaningful life, and discloses the secret of the fullness of life. A contemplative approach to life is indispensable for grasping and living the essence of what it means to be truly human.

Book excerpt: The Gods of Entropy and the Fifth Yin follows Dyfed Lucifer, the only descendant of the multi-dimensional “Hyperborean Masters of the Little Known Universe” to be born on an “earth” that has a history remarkably similar to ours. His mission is to reduce the suffering of humans (the hoi polloi – the fuzz on the peach and the salt of the Earth) and give them the tools to think independently. Standing in the way of Dyfed’s mission are the Haploids, the world’s executive power elite who captain almost every ship of state. These Haploids are the acolytes of myth and responsible for cults, political ideology fallacies, and a corporate establishment that keeps the hoi polloi slaves to debt. Thankfully, as an immortal, Dyfed has time on his hands for this epic quest that extends from early history to a gloomy future that (despite the author’s disclaimer) bears a striking resemblance to the world at large today. Witty, sagacious, and downright spicy, The Gods of Entropy combines satire and surrealism to hold a mirror up to our own civilization that will make readers alternatively chortle and gasp, and most importantly, reflect.

Book excerpt: Is it ever right to lie? Does the Bible allow us to deceive? These are perennial questions that have been discussed and debated by theologians for centuries with little consensus. Entering this discussion, Just Deceivers provides a fresh analysis of thisimportant topic through a comprehensive examination of the motif of deception in the books of Samuel. While many studies have explored deception in other Old Testament texts-especially the patriarchal narratives of Genesis-and a few articles have initiated examination of this motif in Samuel, Just Deceivers builds upon this groundwork and offers an exhaustive treatment of this theme in an important portion of the Hebrew Bible. Newkirk takes the reader through the books of Samuel, investigating every occurrence of deception in the narrative and exploring how the author depicts these various acts of deception, and then synthesises the results to offer an exegetically based theology of deception. In so doing, this study both challenges commonly held views concerning the Bible's stance on falsehood and illustrates the importance of attending to the sophisticated literary character of biblical narrative.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book collection offers strong theoretical and philosophical insight into how digital platforms and their constituent algorithms interact with belief systems to achieve deception, and how related vices such as lies, bullshit, misinformation, disinformation, and ignorance contribute to deception. This inter-disciplinary collection explores how we can better understand and respond to these problematic practices. The Epistemology of Deceit in a Postdigital Era: Dupery by Design will be of interest to anyone concerned with deception in a ‘postdigital’ era including fake news, and propaganda online. The election of populist governments across the world has raised concerns that fake news in online platforms is undermining the legitimacy of the press, the democratic process, and the authority of sources such as science, the social sciences and qualified experts. The global reach of Google, YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, and other platforms has shown that they can be used to create and spread fake and misleading news quickly and without control. These platforms operate and thrive in an increasingly balkanised media eco-system where networks of users will predominantly access and consume information that conforms to their existing worldviews. Conflicting positions, even if relevant and authoritative, are suppressed, or overlooked in everyday digital information consumption. Digital platforms have contributed to the prolific spread of false information, enabled ignorance in online news consumers, and fostered confusion over determining fact from fiction. The collection explores: Deception, what it is, and how its proliferation is achieved in online platforms. Truth and the appearance of truth, and the role digital technologies play in pretending to represent truth. How we can counter these vices to protect ourselves and our institutions from their potentially baneful effects. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June 1942, the U.S. Army began recruiting immigrants, the children of immigrants, refugees, and others with language skills and knowledge of enemy lands and cultures for a special military intelligence group being trained in the mountains of northern Maryland and sent into Europe and the Pacific. Ultimately, 15,000 men and some women received this specialized training and went on to make vital contributions to victory in World War II. This is their story, which Beverley Driver Eddy tells thoroughly and colorfully, drawing heavily on interviews with surviving Ritchie Boys. The army recruited not just those fluent in German, French, Italian, and Polish (approximately a fifth were Jewish refugees from Europe), but also Arabic, Japanese, Dutch, Greek, Norwegian, Russian, Turkish, and other languages—as well as some 200 Native Americans and 200 WACs. They were trained in photo interpretation, terrain analysis, POW interrogation, counterintelligence, espionage, signal intelligence (including pigeons), mapmaking, intelligence gathering, and close combat. Many landed in France on D-Day. Many more fanned out across Europe and around the world completing their missions, often in cooperation with the OSS and Counterintelligence Corps, sometimes on the front lines, often behind the lines. The Ritchie Boys’ intelligence proved vital during the liberation of Paris and the Battle of the Bulge. They helped craft the print and radio propaganda that wore down German homefront morale. If caught, they could have been executed as spies. After the war they translated and interrogated at the Nuremberg trials. One participated in using war criminal Klaus Barbie as an anti-communist agent. Meanwhile, Ritchie Boys in the Pacific Theater of Operations collected intelligence in Burma and China, directed bombing raids in New Guinea and the Philippines, and fought on Okinawa and Iwo Jima. This is a different kind of World War II story, and Eddy tells it with conviction, supported by years of research and interviews.

Book excerpt: Fifty years have passed since the Dark Lord was beaten, and little of what once was the Empire of Light remains. Humanity has risen high to take the reins of power in the vacuum left once the Imperial Grand Council, and is relentless in its pursuit to assert human kind as the new dominant force with all who oppose them running in fear. And tops in their list of enemies is the Harbinger himself; Aen. Aen withdrew completely from all life, and though he is mightily hunted, he has hidden in a place so isolated he cannot be found. Here, he obsesses over the promise he made to Iana. His soul broken from his losses, he sees the truth in all that has happened, and all that is beginning to transpire. He has awakened from his slumber and he is angry. A stranger appears, and her very presence threatens to unwind eons of carefully crafted plans. Her mission: seek out Aen, push him to complete this promise to Iana. But to do that, they will uncover secrets old enough to be forgotten by history, and meet races so ancient, they had become myths.
