Book excerpt: Europeans arrive on a beach, make markets and push inland. They take the land and transform it. They make themselves at home; they dream of other places. And the stories they write take shape in settings - the beach, the farm, the bush, the suburb - that become imaginary versions of actual places. Those settings sometimes host stories that are too simple - too flattering, too blaming - but in the work of our best writers, a richer history of settlement comes into focus. Taking a new approach to the cultural history of this country, The Settler's Plot is a study of the relationship between literature and place in New Zealand. Through fascinating and unpredictable readings of some of our greatest literature, from Maning and Guthrie-Smith to Mansfield, Sargeson, Curnow and Frame, Calder investigates the often contradictory meanings that Pakeha have found in our most familiar settings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: The Magarini Settlement Project in Kenya is typical of many large Third World rural development projects of recent years, not least in its failure to fulfil even minimum goals. First published in 1991, Development in Practice explores the reasons for this projects failure, and looks at the lessons to be learned from this experience for development in general. Challenging many assumptions and approaches, its provocative conclusions will generate much interest amongst development practitioners.

Download Garden Plots PDF by Shelley Boyd Full Free and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2013-05-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadian literature has long been preoccupied with the wilderness and the landscape, but the garden has remained neglected terrain. In Garden Plots, Shelley Boyd focuses on private, domestic gardens tended by individual gardeners, to show how modest, everyday spaces provide fertile grounds for the imagination. Combining the history of gardening with literary analysis, Garden Plots explores the use of the garden motif in the works of five authors: Susanna Moodie, Catharine Parr Traill, Gabrielle Roy, Carol Shields, and Lorna Crozier. With works spanning the nineteenth to twenty-first centuries, these writers reveal the associations between the arts of writing and gardening, the evolving role of the female gardener, and the changes that take place in Canada's literary gardens over time. With the task of understanding our connection to the physical environment becoming increasingly important, Garden Plots explores the subtle relations between place and narrative. This fresh, literary approach to Canada's gardening culture reveals that gardens grow and change not simply in the earth, but also in the pages of our texts.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In volume 2 of the "Afrika-Studien" an appraisal of the agricultural development policy in Tanganyika (now Tanzania) from 1950 to 1963 was made. This report is a continuation of the work in East Africa, with the emphasis lying on a tentative quantitative assessment of costs and benefits of smallholder development. There are few countries in Africa south of the Sahara where as many and as various measures for the promotion of small holder farming have been tried as consistently and intensively as in Kenya. In particular the "Swynnerton Plan" led to the employment of substantial sums in African farming. Some of the approaches have been highly success ful, others not. It is the purpose of this report to inform about aims and institutions, methods and difficulties, costs and benefits. Prof. Dr. EMIL WOERMANN Institut fiir landwirtschaftliche Betriebs- und Landarbeitslehre, Gottingen Acknowledgements As usual with reports of this nature, my main debt is to a great number of smallholders, settlers, scheme managers, Agricultural Officers and Instruc tors who so willingly discussed their problems with me and thus provided the information on which this report is based. I am most grateful for the support rendered by the various Departments of the Kenya Government. A debt of gratitude is owed particularly to the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, Cologne, which provided the funds and to the Ifo-Institute, Munich, which provides the institutional framework for German economic research work in East Africa. Most valuable advice and criticism was given by Mr. ]. D.

Download Urban Historical Geography PDF by Dietrich Denecke Full Free and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1988-06-30 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1988, this book provides a fascinating comparative review of research in urban historical geography in Britain and West Germany. It draws together a wide range of material on the history of urban development to explore the theoretical and methodological possibilities offered by comparative surveys of contrasting national and regional urban expenses. The chronological focus of the essays ranges in time from the medieval period onwards, and the contributors explore not only the specifically intellectual consequences of their empirical research, but also its policy implications for urban planners and conservationists. Serious extended comparative debate has hitherto been absent from the field of urban historical geography as a whole: this volume sought to reverse that trend, and in so doing to establish a fresh research agenda for an important and expanding discipline.
