Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On May 17, 2010, four undocumented students occupied the Arizona office of Senator John McCain. Across the country a flurry of occupations, hunger strikes, demonstrations, and marches followed, calling for support of the DREAM Act that would allow these young people the legal right to stay in the United States. The highly public, confrontational nature of these actions marked a sharp departure from more subdued, anonymous forms of activism of years past. The DREAMers provides the first investigation of the youth movement that has transformed the national immigration debate, from its start in the early 2000s through the present day. Walter Nicholls draws on interviews, news stories, and firsthand encounters with activists to highlight the strategies and claims that have created this now-powerful voice in American politics. Facing high levels of anti-immigrant sentiment across the country, undocumented youths sought to increase support for their cause and change the terms of debate by arguing for their unique position—as culturally integrated, long term residents and most importantly as "American" youth sharing in core American values. Since 2010 undocumented activists have increasingly claimed their own space in the public sphere, asserting a right to recognition—a right to have rights. Ultimately, through the story of the undocumented youth movement, The DREAMers shows how a stigmatized group—whether immigrants or others—can gain a powerful voice in American political debate.

Book excerpt: In the aftermath of the Great Digital Meltdown, human culture has been politically and technologically reinvented. The world's population now stands divided between a fast growing Cognit implanted majority and a non-implanted minority - respectively, the privileged and the excluded. For the followers of The Name, this means struggling against the evil Allianz Federation and the great deception of its popular dream-based metaphysical teachings, the Path of Transcienz. In the American South, members of a worldwide, faith-based Resistance movement have attracted the wrath of the Allianz leadership. Meanwhile, another type of dreaming - among non-implanted children - threatens the future of the entire Federation. As repression against enemies of the Allianz Code increases, the worldwide Resistance is forced to strategically move underground. Great peril and amazing hope collide in this gripping novel about the global underground Church decades in the future, during a time when non-conformity with the world system means persecution and risking everything for the glory of The Name. Antonio Chiareli was born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. After moving to the United States in 1984, he received B.A.s in sociology and French from Macalester College, MN. He pursued graduate studies in sociology and holds an M.A. and Ph.D. from Northwestern University, IL. Focusing on cross-cultural studies, Dr. Chiareli has extensively traveled internationally for research and missions and has been teaching at the university level for almost 15 years. Dr. Chiareli is currently Professor of Sociology at Covenant College, GA, and lives on Lookout Mountain with his wife, Teresa, and their three daughters.

Book excerpt: ‘Riveting, profoundly moving’ Emily St. John Mandel, author of Station Eleven ‘Beautiful and devastating’ Red ‘Thought-provoking and profound’ Cosmopolitan Imagine a world where sleep could trap you, for days, for weeks, for months… She sleeps through sunrise. She sleeps through sunset. And yet, in those first few hours, the doctors can find nothing else wrong. She looks like an ordinary girl sleeping ordinary sleep. Karen Thompson Walker's second novel tells the mesmerising story of a town transformed by a mystery illness that locks people in perpetual sleep and triggers extraordinary, life-altering dreams. One night in an isolated college town in the hills of Southern California, a first-year student stumbles into her room and falls asleep. She sleeps through the morning, into the evening. Her roommate cannot rouse her. Neither can the paramedics, nor the perplexed doctors at the hospital. When a second girl falls asleep, and then a third, panic takes hold of the college and spreads to the town. A young couple tries to protect their newborn baby as the once-quiet streets descend into chaos. Two sisters turn to each other for comfort as their survivalist father prepares for disaster. Written in luminous prose, The Dreamers is a breathtaking and beautiful novel, startling and provocative, about the possibilities contained within a human life if only we are awakened to them. Praise for The Age of Miracles: 'What a remarkable, beautifully wrought novel' Curtis Sittenfeld ‘A beautifully observed coming-of-age tale… nimble, delicate and emotionally sophisticated’ Observer ‘Hauntingly believable… an impressive and quietly terrifying book’ Sunday Times 'A stunner from the first page… I loved this novel and can't wait to see what this remarkable writer will do next' Justin Cronin

Download Dreamers, Visionaries, and Revolutionaries in the Life Sciences PDF by Oren Harman Full Free and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2018-07-20 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the conditions that foster true novelty and allow visionaries to set their eyes on unknown horizons? What have been the challenges that have spawned new innovations, and how have they shaped modern biology? In Dreamers, Visionaries, and Revolutionaries in the Life Sciences, editors Oren Harman and Michael R. Dietrich explore these questions through the lives of eighteen exemplary biologists who had grand and often radical ideas that went far beyond the run-of-the-mill science of their peers. From the Frenchman Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, who coined the word “biology” in the early nineteenth century, to the American James Lovelock, for whom the Earth is a living, breathing organism, these dreamers innovated in ways that forced their contemporaries to reexamine comfortable truths. With this collection readers will follow Jane Goodall into the hidden world of apes in African jungles and Francis Crick as he attacks the problem of consciousness. Join Mary Lasker on her campaign to conquer cancer and follow geneticist George Church as he dreams of bringing back woolly mammoths and Neanderthals. In these lives and the many others featured in these pages, we discover visions that were sometimes fantastical, quixotic, and even threatening and destabilizing, but always a challenge to the status quo.

Book excerpt: Do you ever wonder why your dreams often contain recurring symbol or themes? Have you been haunted by recurring dreams of being chased, being naked in public or having your teeth fall out? Based on her work with dreamers analyzing their own recurring dream symbols, Kathleen Sullivan explains that working recurrent dreams as a series is the key to unleashing the healing force of these symbols. Fourteen dreamers participate in the study illustrating the process of uncovering the profound meaning within each recurring symbol. These are transformational stories of dreamers engaging their own recurring symbols leading to a new wholeness and deep level of growth and understanding. +

This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English - Literature, Works, grade: 1,0, University of Augsburg (Englische Literaturwissenschaft), course: James Joyce, language: English, abstract: This paper analyses the nighttown episode of Joyce's Ulysses through the framework of Freud's psychoanalytic understanding of dreams. Setting of from the assumption that Freud's ground-breaking claims must have found their way into the complex, allusion-laden writing of his contemporary Joyce, it works out elements in the hallucinatory "Circe" chapter that refer to Freud's theory on dreams, concentrating specifically on the portrayal of Bloom. After an overview of the central aspects of Freud's Interpretation of Dreams, the structure of "Circe" will be introduced, justifying the analogy to dreams and tackling the general problem of applying psychoanalysis to literary criticism. The next chapter will take a closer look at Freud’s idea of regression and enumerate elements that may be considered allusions to this in “Circe”. Building on this, the final chapter will then be an attempt at a psychoanalytic reading of Bloom, also drawing upon some additional ideas from Freud’s later theories.
