This seventh edition includes coverage and analysis of the 2019 general election, as well as a preview of the new Canadian government. Other chapters examine the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government, the electoral system, bureaucracy, Québec nationalism, foreign policy, and much more. The authors provide trenchant coverage of many key issues of concern to Canadians, including regionalism, nationalism, climate change, defense policy, Indigenous Peoples’ rights, minority rights, pipelines, and the USMCA trade deal. Download The Canadian Family in Crisis PDF by John F. Conway Full Free and published by James Lorimer & Company. This book was released on 2003-08 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, sociology professor John F. Conway looks at families past, present and future and examines the changing nature of family. Figures from the first decade of the new milennium tell us that one marriage in two may well end in divorce. Conway considers the implications of divorce, the impact of social changes on men, women and children, and suggests how these issues might be better addressed through family policy. The new edition addresses the harsh new reality facing Canadian families, especially those most vulnerable as a result of the crisis of the family. The Canadian Family in Crisis is the first book to examine the drastic changes in the Canadian family over the last thirty years.

Download Canadian Immigration and South Asian Immigrants PDF by Abdur Rahim Full Free and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-09-19 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Asian immigrants have made a significant contribution to the Canadian mosaic. However, their trials and tribulations and their successes and failures constitute a story that remains untold. To know of their arrivals, their struggles to beat the odds, as well as their successes, is to read a story of hard work, of tireless effort to ‘make it’ of the commitment to belong, and of ultimate success. This process not only re-shaped them from ‘who they were’ to ‘who they are now’, but also re-shaped Canada that we know today. Their influence can be felt in the arts and sciences, the humanities and in politics, community works and in social services. This book is an attempt to understand the ‘what’ and ‘how’ of that unfolding process, and also to know the real concerns about the conditions of Canada’s ethnic minority population, South Asian Canadians and their children in particular.

Download Might Nature Be Canadian? PDF by William A. Macdonald Full Free and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2020-03-05 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mutual accommodation is about co-operation, compromise, and inclusion. It's a big idea, equal to freedom, science, and compassion. The postwar global economic order led by the United States is one of the greatest historic achievements of mutual accommodation, yet it is now at risk from the centrifugal forces that have led to populism. Today, to many nations and people, Canada is the model country driven by successful mutual accommodation. In Might Nature Be Canadian? William Macdonald explores the theme of mutual accommodation with a close lens on the Canadian experience. Canada has a drive toward mutual accommodation. The United States has a strong drive toward division. There has always been a divergence of ideologies between the two countries. The United States now appears to view the world as a never-ending struggle, which has become greater since 2000, between good and evil, while Canada, by contrast, leans toward the idea that there is an underlying order at the heart of things. Canada has always faced strong limits in creatively overcoming a challenging geography and French/English language differences within its own borders; on the other hand the United States sees itself as a country with virtually no limits. Throughout its history Canada's drive toward mutual accommodation, stronger than that of any other country, has allowed its increasingly diverse citizens to live together peacefully and successfully, even as they retain their own culture, language, and religion. Nature can be described as simultaneously either/or and both/and. Is there something fundamentally Canadian about this? Taking inspiration from British philosopher Alfred North Whitehead, who said that "civilization is the triumph of persuasion over force," Macdonald argues that the urgent spread of mutual accommodation, a charge led by Canada, is central to achieving a bearable world for everyone.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the organization, lists the units and illustrates the uniforms and equipment of the four Canadian divisions which earned an elite reputation on the Western Front in 1915-18. Canada's 600,000 troops of whom more than 66,000 died and nearly 150,000 were wounded represented an extraordinary contribution to the British Empire's struggle. On grim battlefields from the Ypres Salient to the Somme, and from their stunning victory at Vimy Ridge to the final triumphant 'Hundred Days' advance of autumn 1918, Canada's soldiers proved themselves to be a remarkable army in their own right, founding a national tradition.

Download What Is a Canadian? PDF by Irvin Studin Full Free and published by Douglas Gibson Books. This book was released on 2009-02-24 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each of these essays begins with the words “A Canadian is . . .”. Each one is very different, producing a fascinating book for all thinking Canadians. Irvin Studin is an idealistic young Canadian who wanted to do something extraordinary for his country. So he decided to approach leading Canadians — he calls them “sages” — to tell us what they believe defines us. The people who responded eagerly, to produce an essay of 1,500 to 2,000 words, are, in his words, “all distinguished Canadian thinkers and achievers from all walks of life — politics, the civil service, academia, literature, journalism, business, the arts — from both official language groups, and from all regions of the country, as well as from the Canadian diaspora.” The strength of this book lies in the contributors, listed in the sidebar. The variety ranges from the funny — “A Canadian is . . . someone who crosses the road to get to the middle” (Allan Fotheringham) through the hostile — “. . . the citizen of a country badly in need of growing up” (William Watson) through the surprising — “. . . adaptable. To illustrate, consider the depth and breadth of the Canadian woman’s wardrobe” (Jennifer Welsh) or celebratory — “. . . a wonderful thing to be” (Bob Rae). A Canadian is . . . certain to find this book fascinating. Book excerpt: Full Circle tells the dramatic story of how the Canadian conservative movement was fractured in the 1990s and how it was restored to glory and was returned to power in 2006. It recounts the humiliating defeat of the Progressive Conservative Party, the rise of the Reform Party, and a decade-long sojourn for conservatives in the political wilderness. It lays out, step by step, the strokes and counterstrokes, the promises made and broken, the betrayals and defections within a movement riven by faction. Based on meticulous background research and interviews with the key players, Full Circle takes the reader behind the scenes in a high-octane exposé of political machination, intrigue, and the ultimate battle for survival and supremacy. Sweeping in its breadth and scope, captivating in its detail, Full Circle is the definitive account of this unprecedented period in Canadian political history. Even those involved in conservative politics will be shocked by the starling revelations and debunking of popular myths. The death and resurrection of Canada's conservative political movement over the past two decades is a story that has never been told from beginning to end, until now.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the political impact of journalistic discourse on international -- and especially Canadian/American -- relations. In so doing, it provides a comparative analysis of American and international press accounts of selected Canadian/American issues such as free trade, cruise missile testing, and acid rain. The intention of the book is to enhance understanding of the political significance of journalists' interpretations of Canadian/American affairs, although the communication perspective and method of news analysis of the book are appropriate for the study of the United States' news-mediated relations with other countries. This study also examines the way people negotiate news-mediated political discourse and how that communication process can influence international affairs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to discuss the Canadian welfare state through a health-focused lens, The Politics of Health in the Canadian Welfare State argues that the nature of Canada’s liberal welfare state shapes the health care system, the social determinants of health, and the health of all Canadians. Documenting decades of work on the social determinants of health, authors Toba Bryant and Dennis Raphael explore topics such as power and influence in Canadian society, socially and economically marginalized populations, and approaches to promoting health. Each chapter examines different aspects of the links between public policy, health, and the welfare state, investigating how broader societal structures and processes of the country’s economic and political systems shape living and working conditions and, inevitably, the overall health of Canadians. Contextualizing the history and status of Canadian health and health care systems with Canada’s welfare state, this concise and timely text is well suited as a supplementary resource for health studies, sociology of health, and nursing courses in universities across Canada.
