Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TALES OF THE NINE A young ranger accepts an offer to join a band of eight adventurers, currently on a mission to hunt down evil relics stolen from a Paladin orders stronghold. As the fellowship of greedy, secretive, quick to anger, overly violent, hormonally driven adventure seekers, proceed on their quest, their efforts are repeatedly hampered by obstacles that seem totally random. After a pack of huge hairless wolf like creatures attack the town the group is staying in, they have to consider the possibility that someone or something might be behind all the evil that they have been facing. As deep winter approaches and through encounters with bandits, slavers and foul beasts, the band also has to contend with the knowledge that one of their number might have become tainted by the very evil that they are now hunting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘The Apothecary’s Chest: Magic, Art and Medication’ was a one-day symposium held at the University of Glasgow on November 24, 2007. The symposium called for a discussion on the evolution of the notions of mysticism, knowledge and superstition in the way they are intertwined in both science and the literary imagination in the figure of healers such as the apothecary, the alchemist, the shaman. There were three main areas of interest. The first involved traditional perceptions of physicians, who combined knowledge and superstition and thus bordered, in their practices, on the sphere of the occult. The second theme, evolving from the first, proposed an inquiry of the overlapping interests and processes of science, magic and prophesy, as well as of the implications and consequences of a privileged access to medical knowledge, while the third subject of discussion concentrated on the development of the symbolism of the healer in literature, history, philosophy of science, anthropology, theology, film and art. The twelve papers included in this volume, papers presented by doctoral candidates and young scholars from across a range of geographical regions and disciplines, result in a collection of approaches to an investigative field with topics ranging from mystical traits of mundane materials to the origins of the occult and gender struggles. The thirteenth and final essay included in the volume, Professor Bill Herbert’s ‘From Mere Bellies to the Bad Shaman’, is an exploration of the modern role of the contemporary poet in the form of an extended conversation initiated at the closing of the conference, when Professor Herbert was asked to combine a poetry reading with a few observations on the relationship between the poet and the shaman.

This book was released on 2013-02-03 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historical Archaeology of New York City is a collection of narratives about people who lived in New York City during the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries, people whose lives archaeologists have encountered during excavations at sites where these people lived or worked. The stories are ethnohistorical or microhistorical studies created using archaeological and documentary data. As microhistories, they are concerned with particular people living at particular times in the past within the framework of world events. The world events framework will be provided in short introductions to chapters grouped by time periods and themes. The foreword by Mary Beaudry and the afterword by LuAnne DeCunzo bookend the individual case studies and add theoretical weight to the volume. Historical Archaeology of New York City focuses on specific individual life stories, or stories of groups of people, as a way to present archaeological theory and research. Archaeologists work with material culture—artifacts—to recreate daily lives and study how culture works; this book is an example of how to do this in a way that can attract people interested in history as well as in anthropological theory.

Download Hong Kong Apothecary PDF by Simon Go Full Free and published by Princeton Architectural Press. This book was released on 2003-07 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hong Kong Apothecary transports us to the exotic world of Eastern medicine, a world of oils, powders, pills, and cures for every known ailment from impotency to opium addiction. As peculiar as pink pills for pale people are the packages containing these medicaments. Author Simon Go has combed manufacturers, shops, and home medicine cabinets for years collecting the most compelling examples. the result is a visual cabinet of curiosities, a graphical pharmacopoeia. Divided by type such as ointments, herbal teas, infused oils Hong Kong Apothecary presents the fascinating graphics and tantalizing descriptions of hundreds of medicines and gives us an insight into Chinese customs afforded only by examining the artifacts and customs of everyday life. many of these medicines are no longer produced, making Hong Kong Apothecary a memoir of a quickly disappearing culture. This lavishly illustrated book is of interest as much for designers seeking inspiration in the unknown vernacular of commercial graphics as for anyone interested in Eastern medicine.

Book excerpt: In the Callilibong, the vampires arent shiny, and they arent brimming with teen angst or swimming in oceans of drama. Here in the Callilibong they arent even called Vampires, and this book isnt really about themmores the pity because I hear theyre really big at the moment. What you are holding in your hot little hands is a story about a boy named Evan, two men called Pleth and Falco, and all the various troubles they get into in their roles as Tradesmen, the protectors of The Valley Between the Mountains the Callilibong, in the old Mahoot tongue. Now this is what Callilibong means. Now before you pass on this opportunity in an undue fit of pique, understand that there are vampires inside (though we call them night folk here) and werewolves and a number of other nasty creatures collectively known as creatures of the dusk world. And they are always up to trouble of some sort. Thats why we have tradesmen, and thats where Evans story (which is also Pleth and Falcos story) begins. So pick it up, drop a bit of thread on the pay counter, and have yourself an enjoyable experience in the nooks and crannies of a truly original fantasy world.
