Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes an algorithm developed to calculate the performance of Claude-Cycle ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) systems. The algorithm treats each component of the system separately and then interfaces them to form a complete system, allowing a component to be changed without changing the rest of the algorithm. Two components that are subject to change are the evaporator and condenser. For this study we developed mathematical models of a channel-flow evaporator and both a horizontal jet and spray director contact condenser. The algorithm was then programed to run on SERI's CDC 7600 computer and used to calculate the effect on performance of deaerating the warm and cold water streams before entering the evaporator and condenser, respectively. This study indicates that there is no advantage to removing air from these streams compared with removing the air from the condenser.

While Fortran 77 has been used for many years and is currently very popular, computer scientists have been seriously concerned about good programming practice to promote development of reliable programs. Thus, the International Standards Organization set up a group to 'modernise' Fortran and introduce new features which have made languages such as Pascal and C popular. The committee took over a decade to come up with the new standard, Fortran 90. Fortran 90 has introduced many new features in Fortran, such as recursion, pointers, user-defined data types etc., which were hitherto available only in languages such as Pascal and C. Fortran 90 is not an evolutionary change of Fortran 77 but is drastically different. Though Fortran 77 programs can be run using a Fortran 90 compiler, Fortran 90 is so different that the author felt it was not a good idea to just revise Fortran 77 and introduce Fortran 90 in some places in the book. Thus this book is entirely new and introduces Fortran 90 from basics. In 1996 some small extensions were made to Fortran 90 and has called Fortran 95. This book also discusses these features. As all new programs in Fortran will henceforth be written in Fortran 90, it is essential for students to learn this language.The methodology of presentation, however, closely follows the one used by the author in his popular book on Fortran 77.

The balance of topics in this book is somewhat different from previous texts. We emphasize the use of phase space to describe the dynamics of a system and to have a qualitative understanding of nonlinear systems. We incorporate exercises that are to be done using a computer to solve linear and nonlinear problems and to have a graphical representation of the results. While analytic solutions of physics problems are to be prefer. red, it is not always possible to find them for all problems. When that happens, techniques other than analysis must be brought to bear on the problem. In many cases numerical treatments are useful in generating solutions, and with these solutions often come new insights. These insights can sometimes be used for making further analytic progress, and often the process is iterative. Thus the ability to use a computer to solve problems is one of the tools of the modern physicist. Just as analytic problem-solving enhances the student's understanding of physics, so will using the computer enhance his or her appreciation of the subject.
