Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a true introduction to the basic concepts and techniques of algebraic geometry. The language is purposefully kept on an elementary level, avoiding sheaf theory and cohomology theory. The introduction of new algebraic concepts is always motivated by a discussion of the corresponding geometric ideas. The main point of the book is to illustrate the interplay between abstract theory and specific examples. The book contains numerous problems that illustrate the general theory. The text is suitable for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students. It contains sufficient material for a one-semester course. The reader should be familiar with the basic concepts of modern algebra. A course in one complex variable would be helpful, but is not necessary.

Book excerpt: This textbook is an introduction to algebraic geometry that emphasizes the classical roots of the subject, avoiding the technical details better treated with the most recent methods. It provides a basis for understanding the developments of the last half century which have put the subject on a radically new footing. Based on lectures given at Brown and Harvard, the book retains an informal style and stresses examples. Annotation copyright by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Download Algebraic Geometry PDF by Ulrich Görtz Full Free and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-08-09 with total page 615 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the reader to modern algebraic geometry. It presents Grothendieck's technically demanding language of schemes that is the basis of the most important developments in the last fifty years within this area. A systematic treatment and motivation of the theory is emphasized, using concrete examples to illustrate its usefulness. Several examples from the realm of Hilbert modular surfaces and of determinantal varieties are used methodically to discuss the covered techniques. Thus the reader experiences that the further development of the theory yields an ever better understanding of these fascinating objects. The text is complemented by many exercises that serve to check the comprehension of the text, treat further examples, or give an outlook on further results. The volume at hand is an introduction to schemes. To get startet, it requires only basic knowledge in abstract algebra and topology. Essential facts from commutative algebra are assembled in an appendix. It will be complemented by a second volume on the cohomology of schemes.

Book excerpt: This volume consolidates selected articles from the 2016 Apprenticeship Program at the Fields Institute, part of the larger program on Combinatorial Algebraic Geometry that ran from July through December of 2016. Written primarily by junior mathematicians, the articles cover a range of topics in combinatorial algebraic geometry including curves, surfaces, Grassmannians, convexity, abelian varieties, and moduli spaces. This book bridges the gap between graduate courses and cutting-edge research by connecting historical sources, computation, explicit examples, and new results.

Download Partially Ordered Rings and Semi-Algebraic Geometry PDF by Gregory W. Brumfiel Full Free and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1979-12-20 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this unique book is to establish purely algebraic foundations for the development of certain parts of topology. Some topologists seek to understand geometric properties of solutions to finite systems of equations or inequalities and configurations which in some sense actually occur in the real world. Others study spaces constructed more abstractly using infinite limit processes. Their goal is to determine just how similar or different these abstract spaces are from those which are finitely described. However, as topology is usually taught, even the first, more concrete type of problem is approached using the language and methods of the second type. Professor Brumfiel's thesis is that this is unnecessary and, in fact, misleading philosophically. He develops a type of algebra, partially ordered rings, in which it makes sense to talk about solutions of equations and inequalities and to compare geometrically the resulting spaces. The importance of this approach is primarily that it clarifies the sort of geometrical questions one wants to ask and answer about those spaces which might have physical significance.

Download Hilbert's Tenth Problem: Relations with Arithmetic and Algebraic Geometry PDF by Thanases Pheidas Full Free and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2000 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of a meeting that took place at the University of Ghent (Belgium) on the relations between Hilbert's tenth problem, arithmetic, and algebraic geometry. Included are written articles detailing the lectures that were given as well as contributed papers on current topics of interest. The following areas are addressed: an historical overview of Hilbert's tenth problem, Hilbert's tenth problem for various rings and fields, model theory and local-global principles, including relations between model theory and algebraic groups and analytic geometry, conjectures in arithmetic geometry and the structure of diophantine sets, for example with Mazur's conjecture, Lang's conjecture, and Bücchi's problem, and results on the complexity of diophantine geometry, highlighting the relation to the theory of computation. The volume allows the reader to learn and compare different approaches (arithmetical, geometrical, topological, model-theoretical, and computational) to the general structural analysis of the set of solutions of polynomial equations. It would make a nice contribution to graduate and advanced graduate courses on logic, algebraic geometry, and number theory

Along the way, the authors provide an introduction to some algebraic objects and techniques more advanced than typically encountered in a first course. The book is accessible to non-specialists and to readers with a diverse range of backgrounds, assuming readers know the material covered in standard undergraduate courses, including abstract algebra. But because the text is intended for beginning graduate students, it does not require graduate algebra, and in particular, does not assume that the reader is familiar with modules.

Book excerpt: This book provides a gentle introduction to the foundations of Algebraic Geometry, starting from computational topics (ideals and homogeneous ideals, zero loci of ideals) up to increasingly intrinsic and abstract arguments, such as 'Algebraic Varieties', whose natural continuation is a more advanced course on the theory of schemes, vector bundles, and sheaf-cohomology.Valuable to students studying Algebraic Geometry and Geometry, this title contains around 60 exercises (with solutions) to help students thoroughly understand the theories introduced in the book. Proofs of the results are carried out in full detail. Many examples are discussed in order to reinforce the understanding of both the theoretical elements and their consequences, as well as the possible applications of the material.

Download Methods of Algebraic Geometry in Control Theory: Part II PDF by Peter Falb Full Free and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Control theory represents an attempt to codify, in mathematical terms, the principles and techniques used in the analysis and design of control systems. Algebraic geometry may, in an elementary way, be viewed as the study of the structure and properties of the solutions of systems of algebraic equations. The aim of this book is to provide access to the methods of algebraic geometry for engineers and applied scientists through the motivated context of control theory" .* The development which culminated with this volume began over twenty-five years ago with a series of lectures at the control group of the Lund Institute of Technology in Sweden. I have sought throughout to strive for clarity, often using constructive methods and giving several proofs of a particular result as well as many examples. The first volume dealt with the simplest control systems (i.e., single input, single output linear time-invariant systems) and with the simplest algebraic geometry (i.e., affine algebraic geometry). While this is quite satisfactory and natural for scalar systems, the study of multi-input, multi-output linear time invariant control systems requires projective algebraic geometry. Thus, this second volume deals with multi-variable linear systems and pro jective algebraic geometry. The results are deeper and less transparent, but are also quite essential to an understanding of linear control theory. A review of * From the Preface to Part 1. viii Preface the scalar theory is included along with a brief summary of affine algebraic geometry (Appendix E).
